Relocating and Moving Tips
Moving can be tedious and time consuming but with these helpful packing tips you can be sure to stay organized and clean when it comes to unpacking.
- When choosing boxes, don't use ones that have been used numerous times and are wearing out. They may be on the bottom of a large stack and not able to keep upright anylonger.
Fill each box. Boxes that are underfilled are more likely to be crushed and boxes that are overfilled can tear or fall apart
- Keep the weight on the boxes as consistent as possible. It's a good rule of thumb to keep boxes around the 30lb mark for the safety of you, your friends and any movers.
Label all boxes as soon as you're done packing them (e.g. "Bathroom", "Bedroom", "Kitchen"). When labeling, draw an arrow on the box to indicate which side is the top of the box and write the room label on multiple sides. This not only saves time but clutter as well as when you unpack the box can go directly to the right room.
- Don't be afraid to start early! If you're moving in the summer, there's no reason that you can't pack your winter clothes two months before your move date. This is good advice also for those listing their home and need to sell. It keeps the clutter at bay.
Wrap all glassware, china, and breakables individually in towels or packing material. If you're trying to save money, wrap each item in newspaper! Don't be tempted to cram items together or they may clink and break. Get wine boxes from wine and liquor stores, they have the individual dividers and use them to pack your glasses and breakables.
- NEVER pack explosives, combustibles (gasoline), food of any kind, liquids, or pets. These could cause damage and will void your insurance.
Use space bags for pillows and blankets and off season clothes, they shrink down to practically nothing.
- Pack the moving truck in the order you want furniture to come out of the truck. Have friends and movers assist you in putting all large pieces and furniture in its place before they leave, use the bottom of the closet in the appropriate room to put boxes in so the house will begin clean.
Set up the kitchen first, this will save you money in the long run. Not having to order out for meals!
